In some parts of an external wall water can collect behind the inner face (over window and door heads) and there must be provision to drain it away from the cavity tray. This is achieved by open cross joints spaced at regular intervals, say 1m, and is traditionally done by inserting a short length of lath in the joint to be removed when set; weep holes are now manufactured as a permanent plastic insert.
