Made from a refractory clay which has a high proportions of alumina and silica but is free of lime and metallic oxides. Firebricks are hard; dense and capable of resisting fierce temperatures coupled with a high crushing strength. In contrast are the lightweight insulating bricks made from deposits of a cellular material formed by the fossilized remains of minute marine organisms.
